Supply of Prefabricated Structures
Design of Walls and Bridges

Buried Structures and Long-Span Bridges

Let’s have a conversation

Long Span Bridges

PEDESTRIAN and VEHICULAR

SPECS offers the design and supply of several long-span bridge options, including:

  • Modular vehicular steel I-beam structures spanning up to 120 feet
  • Prefabricated vehicular or pedestrian steel truss superstructures spanning up to 200 feet
  • Precast and cast-in-place concrete Girder and Slab Bridges of varying spans

Buried Prefabricated Structures

SPECS designs and supplies modular, three-sided structures for rapid construction of bridges, culverts, tunnels and environmental impact-avoidance crossings. Each system is custom designed and manufactured to meet specific site requirements. Prefabricated units are shipped to the jobsite via flatbed truck and installed by a crane. Typical installations are completed in a single day. Backfill and compaction can begin immediately. Footings can be precast or cast-in-place, strip footings or slab, pile caps or pedestal walls.

Buried structures offer reduced long-term maintenance by eliminating the bridge deck, which presents a more economical long-term roadway maintenance obligation. Clear span structures eliminate the potential for debris capture at the pier.

Precast Concrete Arch Structures
Corrugated Steel Plate Structures
Precast Box Culverts

Precast Concrete Arch Structure

Arch culverts offer both the open-area benefits of a rectangular box culvert as well as the structural load-carrying capacity of an arch structure. The arch shape provides the most efficient and cost-effective structural cross section, while the vertical side walls of the arch-box shape result in greater open area for increased hydraulic clearance. SPECS’ three-sided structure can be set on shallow or pile-supported strip foundations to avoid disturbing wetlands and streams. With a variety of span and rise combinations from 12 feet to 52 feet, the SPECS three-sided arch structures offer speed of construction, environmental avoidance, cost savings compared to conventional box or bridge construction and minimized long-term maintenance.

Corrugated Steel Plate Structures

Corrugated steel structures are a cost-effective, durable buried structure solution. They are shipped to the jobsite in bundles of stacked corrugated steel plates, which are easily removed with light construction equipment. Different corrugation profiles allow spans ranging from 6 ft to 80 ft. The deep corrugations offer nine times the stiffness of conventional structural plate, allowing it to withstand heavy loading and span greater distances. A variety of standard geometric configurations are available, as well as custom shapes designed specifically for your site.   Prefabricated structures offer a fast installation and are all designed for your custom site conditions. Some common design conditions that can be accommodated are listed below.
  • Skewed ends, radius or tangent channel alignments
  • AREMA, FAA, and AASHTO LRFD design codes
  • Lateral pipe penetration or inspection portals, full-section skylights or maintenance hatches
  • Tall vertical clearances for tunnels
  • Live Loads including Cooper E-80, Permit loading, HL-93, airport as well as extreme Dead Loads from high-fill configurations and seismic loading

Precast Box Culverts

SPECS has 3- and 4-sided box culvert options that range from 4 feet to 40 feet in span. The 4-sided structures can be made in two pieces to maximize the lay length and minimize the number of joints, as well as offering up to a 16-foot rise.
