On February 3, 2020, SPECS Vice President of Engineering Karen Doll presented a Caltrans Specifications training class to a group of American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) attendees held at LA County Department of Public Works.
Karen worked with long-time friend and colleague Jack Abcarius of NV5 and Tina Chen, Senior Bridge Engineer with Caltrans Structure Specifications South, to present an overview of the 2018 Standard Specifications. The training included discussions of the following:
- General overview of the Plain Language Specifications that started in 2010
- Guidance and reference documents available on Caltrans website
- Updates to the 2018 Standard Specifications from 2015
- Recent changes to the 2018 Standard Specifications, including published updates on 10/19/18, 4/19/19 and 10/18/19
- Upcoming changes to the Structure Specifications
- Methods for creating Project Special Provisions
- Writing Non-Standard Special Provisions
- Walk-through of example projects
The training was a great success with over 50 attendees that came from both the public and private sector. The group had a high level of engagement and ACEC deemed it a successful training session.
